Technology Standard

Operating a Video CameraI borrowed a video camera from a friend. I used a tripod to make it steady. I used the zoom to slowly get closer towards the guitar, the book and the couple sitting in the tree.

Composing Shots
To get a closer shot of the couple I make sure that I have the camera closer to them. With composing a shot that has more than one angle, I had to make sure that the different positions I took it from would be the right place and have the actors do the same movement which is shown in the 3 shots with them walking through the trees.

Using Music
I have used two songs over top of my movie. The first song used was quite hard to get the right parts of the song to go with the film as there was a lot of cutting and rearranging to make it all flow together. I used fading of the end song so it wouldn't sunddenly stop.

Importing video files
I put the file that I had recorded onto the computer and then imported it onto the movie maker.

Editing Images for moving image production
I used Windows movie maker for editing my movie because I found it a lot easier to use rather than the Adobe movie maker. Even though the windows programme isnt as professional as the Adobe programme, it still worked out how I wanted it to. I also had a bit of trouble with the Adobe maker as it wasn't letting me do certain things and was working very slowly. Im still happy with how it turned out with using the windows movie maker.

Evaluation

Positive Aspects
I was really happy with the way everything went together and how the scenes that had different angles all flowed together. This is shown in the scene with the couple walking through the trees and the 3 shots go together well. Another positive aspect was how well I put the music over top of the film and got it how I wanted. Also how the music stopped when the motorbike was driving off and then started again with the new song for the credits.

Steps in the process that could have been done better
Things that could have been done better was to video the same scenes a few more times so I had more of a choice of what one I wanted to use. I could have also used my time more wisely and taken the videos outside earlier in the day so the audience would be able to see it better.

Strategies to achieve this
Start recording earlier and take more time looking over each scene before I started with the next one. Also recording more to make it a little bit longer so the songs would fit in a bit easier.

Some evaluation of how these changes to the production process may have affected the media product.
It might have been able to make it flow together better with including the use of the music and made it longer and not so rushed.

Research

I got the guitar and other props sorted out.
Went walking around Harewood School to find the best place to take the shots.
Found the music I wanted to use.
Talked about how and where they would ride the motorbike safely.

Art Department

My costumes that my actor and actresses are wearing, are sourced from their wardrobes. They are wearing casual clothes to make them look younger than they are.
Props that we have used were found around my house including the guitar, pen and paper etc.

Treatment

The first song 'Can't keep on loving you' starts to play. The first scene is going to will be a close up of the girl's work with her hand writing some things to show she is hard working. The next will be a mid shot also showing the back of her still doing her work. Then a mid shot from the side of her but she has her hand on her face so you cant see who it is. The next scene will be a close up of the guitar and will have the guy playing it and I will pan up to the neck of the guitar where you will see him changing chords. Then there will be a mid shot from behind him still playing the guitar then a mid shot from the whole of his body except his face as I don't want anyone to know who he is yet. All of these shots will be about 6-8 seconds long. The next will be the guy opening the door from his house and walking outside as to show he is going to the park. Then will be the girl opening the door at her house. The next shot will be them two meeting at the park and they hug and walk away. The next will be a long shot of the two characters through the trees at the park holding hands, walking through. There will be a few different shots of this. The next shot is both of the characters sitting on a branch up a tree talking and laughing. It then switches to night time where the girl is inside standing across from her mum with her mum yelling at her. Then switches to an over the shoulder shot facing the girl and she is yelling at her mum. It then changes to the girl jumping out of a window the shot taken from outside watching her starting to climb oout her window then quickly switches to behind her where she jumps right out and runs out. It then switches to showing both of the characters on his motorbike and shows them driving away. The music will stop and you will only hear the sound of the motorbike in the final scene. Then the next song 'I'll love you so' comes on which brings on the credits.

Concept

My movie/beginning is going to be a romance about a girl and guy about 17/18 year olds. There is going to be a conflict of how hard their lives are and the beginning is going to show this. The rest of the movie would then be about solving these problems. Their conflict will be that their lives are different including eg. she is a hard working girl and her parents want her to do everything right in her life and work hard. Her parents are uptight and strict and don't let her do anything fun. He is a motorbike guy who doesnt have a mother and his father is no help. Her parents forbid her to see him so she sneaks out the window and jumps on his bike. Or her parents send her away etc etc.. I wish to show the troubles they are having yet how they are in love and want to be with each other forever. I want the audience to want to watch the rest of the movie as I want them to be intrigued of whats going to happen and how they will solve it.

Thinking About Genre

Scream and Halloween - Female Lead
                                                                  Sidney Prescott

Laurie Strode
LaurieStrode.jpg

In the movies Scream and Halloween, one of the main conventions used is the Female Lead. This is used in both movies to help show how the women could protect themselves from evil things and that they don't need others' help. They are used as the main victim in both movies but they overcome the killer and become the heroine for example in Scream, Sidney attacks the killers and kills them and in Halloween Laurie helps to save herself and other children.
Laurie is an academic woman who is very caring of the kids. Before her friends are killed, they depend on Laurie as she is a strong and protective woman. She has the strength to kill Mike Myers three times before Dr Loomis saves her.
Sidney is a quite and innocent girl who surprises us when she is needed to fight back against the killer. She is a regular teenage girl who attends school and has a boyfriend but doesn't get pressured into anything she doesn't want to do.

This convention was used this way to show in Halloween how Laurie is the motherly type female who doesn't get pressured into having sex and so has purity which shows the audience that she deserves to stay alive. In Scream, Sidney has sex but it still shows the audience that she gets a bit pressured into it and even after she can protect herself from what everyone else is doing. Using this convention helps to show that both the female leads are not the helpless victims that most other movies would. This links to the film as a whole because they are the last main characters to survive including most of the males which you would expect to live because they are portrayed as the strong protective people. I think the audiences response was that they would not expect the female victim to live because the women are portrayed as helpless and fragile so we would think that they would give up and not fight back. The way this convention was used to show them departing from tradition was shown because the woman in many movies who are the victim would be helpless and scared to do anything to help themselves and others but in both of these movies, both Laurie and Sidney are able to fight towards the killer and not just sit back and let the men do all the work.

The impact this convention had on these films was it made it more of a mystery for the audience because you would think that they wouldn't last/live through the whole movie. This convention helped with the success of the movies as they achieved a lot of money. I think this is because Sidney and Laurie are the main characters which would make it appeal to audience's more as they would want to know what would happen to them. Scream's box office sales were $173.046,663 and Halloweens got $60 million worldwide. After these films were made there were more horror movies made that had female leads and more and more of these movies they are surviving through to the end. Before these movies were made there were less movies with these conclusions and the females were the scared characters who hung behind the men for protection. The effects that these movies could have on society is that it could give people ideas on things to do and not to do and how to eg kill and torture people. It could also have a psychological effects on people because they could get scared and might be traumatized for life.

Techniques part c

Lighting
In the first scene, there is a very little amount of light used with the hip hop dancers as they are on the street at night, while the ballerinas and ballerino dancers are in the light. The ballet dancers are dancing at day time which is filled with the light from outside because they are inside a studio.
These examples are effective because they are the total opposite and the lack of light outside with the hip hop dancers shows their casual lifestyle and dance but also shows that they have a hard life as they have no proper place to dance or organised lessons, however the light in the dance studio shows their competitive and organized lifestyle as they are at a dance school which shows there wealth as they have a place to go.
The contrast of these two dances relates to the film as a whole as they are made to join the dance types together. This is also shown in the last dance scene at the end of the movie when both dances are made together into one dance and it shows how it has changed throughout the movie because at the beginning of the movie they were very separate dances but they found a way for the hip hop to be able to fit into the ballet routine. The lighting at the end compared to the beginning helps to show the development of the themes and how the two different worlds have come together.

Music
In the first scene, music is a huge part as it is used for both of the dances when needing to mix them together, even though they are such different styles of dance. The song is called Show Me the Money by Petey Pablo which has violins which help show the enlivening of the ballet but also drums and bass which shows the up beat of the hip hop.
The music has lyrics which talks about dancing "Show off that body you got, You got that dance floor so hot, You workin that, You twerkin that, You checkin that, like a clock." This also tells us that its about dancing as they tell it to you in words. The song stay the same throughout the opening but has a few instrumentals.
This music is very effective because when listening to it you don't have to be watching it to get the effect as it is very energetic.
This music catches the viewers attention as it is a fast tempo and up beat which helps to show the style of each dance. The music helps to show the way the characters dance and how the difference of dance can be shown through the music. This technique is used throughout the movie and when Tyler dances with Nora in the last dance scene the music is also made to fit both of the dances together.

Transitions + Length of takes
In the first scene, there are many transitions and the length of takes of the different dances is very short yet there are many transitions from each dance type to the next, for example it shows the ballet dancers feet and how they dance then the next shot is the hip hop dancers feet and their style.
The editing is has very quick cuts with a black screen in between which tells us that it seems like the dances are mixing together and may mix together throughout the whole movie. When it switches from showing a part of the dancers bodies to the next it helps show they major difference the dances have and when the transitions gets faster it gives off the effect that the dances are merging.

Sound
In the first scene, there is only a small amount of sound other than music in the first few shots of each dance. Even though there is only a small amount of other sound it still tells us a lot of information about how different each dancer is from each type of dance. The first shot with the ballet dancers is just the sound of them talking and getting ready yet the sound and surrounding sound of the hip hop dancers are the sounds of them talking loudly and sirens in the street.
The small sounds of the ballet dancers shows that they are professional and want to get on with dancing straight away but the hip hop dancers shows what kind of environment they are in with the sirens and their talking loudly tells us that they are casual dancers and just there to have fun. This is carried on throughout the first few scenes of the movie when you are introduced to the main characters. Nora the ballet dancer is always professional and dedicated to her dance yet Tyler is brought up in the hip hop world where he doesn't care about winning and just wants to have fun with the dance he loves. This is changed throughout the rest of the movie when Tyler changes his attitude and finally dances with Nora in the last scene.

Genre/Atmosphere

Genre/Atmosphere

What is the tone, mood and how it is created?
The hip hop dancing brings a gangster type feel to it because of the type of clothes they are wearing and also because it is on the street and in the dark which doesn't bring a very welcoming environment as it seems a bit scary. When it switches to the ballet it brings a flowy peaceful feel to it and this is shown by the bright lighting which shows the safeness. Also their costumes, tutu's and tights etc, show the commitment they have to the dance. The song brings excitement to both of the dances and when you see the street dancing you don't know what is going to happen because the music makes a bit of a scary scene like there could be a drive by shooting but when you see the ballet it brings a better feel to it. After seeing both of the dances mixing together, it makes you know that something is going to happen involving the two but it makes you wonder how they are going to do it.
This film appeals to it's young audience because the music creates an energetic and exciting sound. The dark and then the sudden change to light also appeals to the young audience as it catches the eye.

my movie! :)

Hey Ms Kazimi! :)

I have chosen to do the film opening of the movie Step Up. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZWMe3k_XBUU
Its about a guy Tyler and a dancer Nora, from Maryland School of Arts. Tyler meets Nora when doing 200 hours of community service at the school and when Nora's dancing partner sprains his ankle, after she sees Tyler dancing, he offers to help out and be her partner. Because Nora does ballet and Tyler does Hip Hop they both have to teach each other their style of dance. In the end they both dance the finale with some trouble on the way but it is a happy ending. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Step_Up_%28film)

The opening of this movie shows the two different types of dance. Hip hop in the outside in the rain on the street where there are guys and girls dressed in trackies and t-shirts while in a studio it shows the ballet dancing in their leotards and tights dancing peacefully etc. It also shows how the Ballet dancers have an organised dance while the Street Dancers are dancing freestyle. This beginning of the movie fits into the film as a whole because it shows the two different types of dances, hip hop and ballet, and these two dance types continue throughout the movie.
This appealed to me because I'm interested in dance.

I chose this opening because it always switches from hip hop to ballet which are such different types of dance but the music blends them in.
