In the first scene, there is a very little amount of light used with the hip hop dancers as they are on the street at night, while the ballerinas and ballerino dancers are in the light. The ballet dancers are dancing at day time which is filled with the light from outside because they are inside a studio.
The contrast of these two dances relates to the film as a whole as they are made to join the dance types together. This is also shown in the last dance scene at the end of the movie when both dances are made together into one dance and it shows how it has changed throughout the movie because at the beginning of the movie they were very separate dances but they found a way for the hip hop to be able to fit into the ballet routine. The lighting at the end compared to the beginning helps to show the development of the themes and how the two different worlds have come together.
Music
In the first scene, music is a huge part as it is used for both of the dances when needing to mix them together, even though they are such different styles of dance. The song is called Show Me the Money by Petey Pablo which has violins which help show the enlivening of the ballet but also drums and bass which shows the up beat of the hip hop.
The music has lyrics which talks about dancing "Show off that body you got, You got that dance floor so hot, You workin that, You twerkin that, You checkin that, like a clock." This also tells us that its about dancing as they tell it to you in words. The song stay the same throughout the opening but has a few instrumentals.
This music is very effective because when listening to it you don't have to be watching it to get the effect as it is very energetic.
This music catches the viewers attention as it is a fast tempo and up beat which helps to show the style of each dance. The music helps to show the way the characters dance and how the difference of dance can be shown through the music. This technique is used throughout the movie and when Tyler dances with Nora in the last dance scene the music is also made to fit both of the dances together.
Transitions + Length of takes
In the first scene, there are many transitions and the length of takes of the different dances is very short yet there are many transitions from each dance type to the next, for example it shows the ballet dancers feet and how they dance then the next shot is the hip hop dancers feet and their style.
The editing is has very quick cuts with a black screen in between which tells us that it seems like the dances are mixing together and may mix together throughout the whole movie. When it switches from showing a part of the dancers bodies to the next it helps show they major difference the dances have and when the transitions gets faster it gives off the effect that the dances are merging.
Sound
In the first scene, there is only a small amount of sound other than music in the first few shots of each dance. Even though there is only a small amount of other sound it still tells us a lot of information about how different each dancer is from each type of dance. The first shot with the ballet dancers is just the sound of them talking and getting ready yet the sound and surrounding sound of the hip hop dancers are the sounds of them talking loudly and sirens in the street.
The small sounds of the ballet dancers shows that they are professional and want to get on with dancing straight away but the hip hop dancers shows what kind of environment they are in with the sirens and their talking loudly tells us that they are casual dancers and just there to have fun. This is carried on throughout the first few scenes of the movie when you are introduced to the main characters. Nora the ballet dancer is always professional and dedicated to her dance yet Tyler is brought up in the hip hop world where he doesn't care about winning and just wants to have fun with the dance he loves. This is changed throughout the rest of the movie when Tyler changes his attitude and finally dances with Nora in the last scene.
